In the Canary Islands as throughout Spain the official language is Spanish, but since in the most countries English is widely spoken, that is the second most widely spoken language and some people understand German. In almost all public establishments, such as shops, restaurants, hotels, etc there is likely to be more than one person who speaks English or German
